POSITION: Fleet Maintenance Technician

DEPARTMENT: Central Services

WORK SCHEDULE: As assigned

SALARY: $24.84 per hour

Incumbent serves as Fleet Maintenance Technician for the City of Mishawaka Central Services Department, responsible for performing skilled work in maintenance and mechanical repair of City vehicles and equipment.

DUTIES:

  • Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts on vehicles and equipment.

  • Rebuilds parts for repair and/or overhauls light and heavy equipment.

  • Lubricates motors, checks motor valves and belts, and adjusts and repairs any mechanism that malfunctions including hydraulic and electrical systems.

  • Designs and fabricates specialized custom components as needed.

  • Tests, repairs, and make recommendations to manager.

  • Maintains supplies and parts.

  • Performs gas and Heli-arc welding and related fabrications.

  • Remove trees jeopardizing roadways.

  • Remove dead animals from roadways.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

I. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • High school diploma or HSE with minimum of 3 years of experience in mechanical maintenance and repair required.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Ability to meet all hiring requirements, including passage of drug screening.

  • Thorough mechanical knowledge of auto and truck maintenance and repair.

  • Practical knowledge of mechanical diagnostic techniques and equipment, with ability to read gauges and operate test equipment.

  • Working knowledge of and ability to make practical application of department safety policies and procedures and applicable OSHA safety policies and procedures.

  • Ability to physically perform essential duties of the position, including exerting sustained physical effort, sitting and walking at will, standing/walking for long periods, bending, crouching/kneeling, reaching, handling/grasping/fingering objects, pushing/pulling/lifting/ carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, climbing ladders, driving, hearing sounds/ communication, close and far vision, color perception, depth perception, and speaking clearly.

  • Ability to provide own tools and properly operate light/medium/heavy equipment and vehicles and hand/power tools, including, but not limited to, hammers, screw drivers, wrenches, drills, air vice, power saws, air nozzle, air compressor, deburring/deflashing tools, mops, brooms, gauges, files, micrometers, drivers, ratchets, steam cleaner, calipers, manlift, pallet jack, grinder, fork lift, test tank, overhead crane, belt sander, pressure washer, delivery truck, punch press, drill press, cutting torch, welding equipment, computerized diagnostic equipment, and other equipment, vehicles, and tools as needed.

  • Ability to operate standard office equipment such as computer, scanner, calculator, and telephone

  • Ability to count and perform basic arithmetic.

  • Ability to read and interpret detailed prints, sketches, layouts, specifications, maps, and technical and equipment manuals.

  • Ability to provide public access to, or maintain confidentiality of, department information and records according to State requirements.

  • Shall comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.

  • Ability to eff ctively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other City departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.

  • Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

  • Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.

  • Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.

  • Ability to work weekends, and evenings, travel out of town for pickup and delivery, serve on call and respond to emergencies on 24-hour basis.

  • Possession of valid drivers license required and demonstrated safe driving record; CDL Class A or B preferred.

II. RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent is responsible for proper completion of assigned tasks, with desired results clearly specified. Unusual situations or problems are discussed with the supervisor, and incumbent is responsible for applying standard departmental practices and precedents to individual work assignments. Work product is periodically assessed for overall conformity with guidelines and standard departmental practices.

Incumbent reports directly to Street Commissioner.

III. PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Incumbent exerts sustained physical effort involving bending, crouching/kneeling, reaching, standing/walking for long periods, climbing ladders, pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying objects weighing over 50 pounds, and handling/grasping/fingering objects. Intense physical strain is not prolonged.

IV. WORKING CONDITIONS:

Incumbent performs duties primarily in garage/shop and outdoor settings, involving exposure to fumes, chemicals, dust, dirt, power equipment, excessive noise, varying weather conditions, extreme temperatures, slippery surfaces, and dangerous traffic conditions. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self or others and protective gear must be worn according to Department policy.

Incumbent is required to work weekends, and evenings, travel out of town for pick up and delivery, serve on call and required to respond to emergencies on 24-hour basis.
